New Luton Town coach Jack Wilshere has revealed why Marvelous Nakamba hasn’t played much under his tenure so far.
Wilshere has overseen Luton’s three games so far, and Nakamba has only featured once.
The Zimbabwean was named in the new coach’s squad for his first game, a league match against Mansfield, but was not used. He was then dropped from the matchday squad for the next game against Northampton before making the first XI against Brighton & Hove Albion U21s in their Vertu Trophy group stage tie on Tuesday night.
Speaking to the Luton Today newspaper, Wilshere explained why the midfielder hasn’t played much under his tenure, saying:
“I like Marv and I had to understand a little bit what was going on when I came in because he obviously hasn’t played. He played a couple of games for his national team [in the final World Cup Qualifiers] which I think was good for him, he came back and he’s been training well. He’s been hungry, he’s been really humble I would say, I love the way he is with his character and as you saw tonight, he can win duels, keeps it simple and he’s played at a high level. So hopefully we can get him a little bit fitter, get him a few more games and he can help us.”
Nakamba has been battling fitness issues of late and still can’t train every day due to recurring pain from a knee injury — the second of his career — suffered almost two years ago.
The Warriors captain is expected to be part of the national team squad that will play at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco in December.
