Cameroon coach David Pagou has explained why South Africa hold an advantage ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Round of 16 encounter.
The Indomitable Lions will face Bafana Bafana at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 9pm CAT.
Speaking ahead of the match, Pagou said South Africa benefit from having players who have played together for a long time, with most of them competing in the same domestic league.
“We know that the South African team is a strong and stubborn opponent. They have a well-known league and players who have known each other for a long time, so the match will be complicated. They are a good and cohesive group,” the Cameroon coach said.
“We will play to our strengths, and we will try to make the match difficult for them. The goal is to be present in force and deliver a good performance.”
Despite acknowledging South Africa’s advantage, Pagou added that this could place added pressure on the COSAFA side ahead of Sunday’s clash.
“We are satisfied because we qualified. During the last Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa had a very good run. They will be under pressure because we are a team in the making. It will be a very complicated match,” said the coach.
