Motherwell coach Jens Berthel Askou has admitted that keeping key players like Tawanda Maswanhise will be a difficult task after the Warriors striker’s strong performances this season.

Maswanhise is currently leading the Scottish Premiership scoring chart with ten goals and has netted fifteen across all competitions this campaign.

The 22-year-old scored his latest goal in the 1–1 league draw against Hibernian on Saturday.

With interest from other clubs reportedly emerging, Askou has shared his thoughts on the challenge of retaining Maswanhise and other key players.

“I think you are spot on there, it is a big thing for us,” the gaffer said when asked if keeping the likes of midfielder Elliott Watt and Maswanhise would be crucial.

He continued: “That’s the main plan, to make sure that this team gets the maximum out of this group of players, gets the maximum out of this season, and then we know in the summer it’s a bigger window.

“So that’s the main track for us and then, obviously, there are a few gaps here and there and we’ll see if we can fill them with quality like we did in the summer.

“There were a lot of gaps we had to fill.”

Askou also heaped praise on Maswanhise’s performances this season, saying: “There’s been a lot of debate and discussion, which is natural, about us needing a goalscorer.

“Throughout the season we have used him as a nine and you can see he’s a constant threat in so many ways, not just running in behind but also 1v1 inside the box, where he can find good positions – and today he got a beautiful goal.”
