The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the introduction of a new tournament, the African Nations League.

The competition takes a similar approach to the European Nations League, although it will differ slightly in format.

The African Nations League will officially start in 2029 and will be played during the September, October and November international windows. However, it is not yet known whether the new competition will be held on a biennial or annual basis.

According to CAF, the organisation will partner with FIFA on the African Nations League.

Meanwhile, the new tournament effectively replaces the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which has been scrapped.

Format

The tournament will involve all 54 CAF member associations, divided into four geographical zones, with matches played in September and October before the finals are held in November.

Each zone will stage its own group phase, with teams facing one another during the September and October international windows. These matches will serve as the first layer of qualification.

Once the group stage concludes, only the highest-placed team from each zone will progress to the final round. The concluding phase, scheduled for November, will see the four regional winners face off in the final.
