Deputy Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Emily Jesaya, today visited the Mighty Warriors’ training camp to assess the team’s preparedness and welfare ahead of the upcoming COSAFA Women’s Championship in Polokwane, South Africa.
The tournaments kicks off from February 18-March 1.
Speaking during the visit, Jesaya said the engagement was meant to demonstrate government support for the national women’s football team and reaffirm its commitment to the development and empowerment of women in sport.
She said the government sought to understand the team’s living conditions, training facilities, nutrition and overall state of readiness as they prepare to represent the country.
“We thought it was important to interact with the players to show government support and our commitment to the development of sports, especially women in sport. We wanted to understand where they are camping, what facilities they are using, what they have been eating and their state of preparedness,” said Jesaya.
The Deputy Minister described the meeting with the players and technical team as productive, noting that several issues relating to players’ welfare, expectations, contracts and accommodation were discussed.
She said the government would take up the concerns raised by the players and engage relevant stakeholders, including football authorities and government ministries, to improve their conditions.
“It was an enlightening meeting and we are going to take up the issues they raised and engage the relevant stakeholders to see how best we can support the girls,” she said.
Jesaya also expressed satisfaction with the team’s morale, adding that the players were ready to represent Zimbabwe with pride at the regional tournament.
The Mighty Warriors are currently in camp intensifying preparations for the COSAFA Women’s Championships.
