Zimbabwe Football Association president Nqobile Magwizi says the association’s focus extends beyond the upcoming COSAFA tournament, with deliberate efforts underway to build a sustainable future for women’s football in Zimbabwe.
Speaking during a tour of the Mighty Warriors’ camp, Magwizi outlined plans to establish a clear talent development pathway for the girl child, starting from grassroots level up to the senior national team.
“We are building a foundation for football across Zimbabwe. For women specifically, the journey is very intentional. We are looking at creating pathways from young girls all the way to the elite side,” he said.
While emphasising that Zimbabwe will compete to win tournaments this year, Magwizi added that the broader goal is long-term competitiveness at major international competitions.
“In year two, we should be participating competitively at the Olympics. At WAFCON, we must compete strongly. Even when it comes to the World Cup in the next four years, we must be ready. But it is a process,” he said.
Magwizi pointed out that welfare remains a priority, revealing that there has been a significant increment in players’ allowances and a push to ensure that camping standards for women match those of their male counterparts who are usually booked at better facilities.
