After spending time with the COSAFA Women’s Cup semi-finalists, Mighty Warriors in Polokwane, Deputy Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture Hon Emily Jesaya said the government’s growing support for women’s football is reflected not only through financial backing but also through direct moral support and engagement with the national teams.
Hon Jesaya described her presence during the team’s group stage campaign as ‘very crucial,’ saying it was important to physically show support beyond financial assistance.
Mighty Warriors had a decent performance in the group stage, finishing second to Zambia and qualifying for the next stage as the second-best team.
The team opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Eswatini before drawing with Zambia and recording a 1-0 win over Botswana in their final group game.
“As their Deputy Minister, I wanted to show them that I care about their well-being and success. It is not just about providing financial resources, but also about being a source of motivation and inspiration,” she said.
Hon. Jesaya added that engaging with the players in person allowed her to understand their challenges while boosting morale ahead of their matches.
“As a woman in leadership, it is essential to support and empower other women to succeed. The Mighty Warriors are an inspiration to young girls and women across the country,” she said.
Her visit follows the government’s recent financial support to the team, a move she said was meant to assure the players that they are valued and backed at the national level.
“My message to them is simple: I believe in them, and I am committed to supporting them every step of the way. They are not alone in this journey,” Jesaya said.
She emphasised that investment in women’s sport remains a long-term government priority, highlighting ongoing efforts in funding, infrastructure development, and capacity-building programs.
“We are dedicated to creating a sustainable environment where women athletes can thrive and compete at the highest levels,” she said.
Hon. Jesaya said that the government will continue to support equal opportunities across all sporting disciplines as part of bigger efforts to advance gender equality and national development through sport.
