Masvingo Woman Dies After Failing to Raise Funds for Lifesaving Procedure…

Tinashe Sambiri– A 67-year-old woman from Rujeko A in Masvingo has died after her family failed to secure the funds required for a critical medical procedure, highlighting ongoing challenges within Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.

Enesy Wedza had been battling a severe oesophageal growth that made it impossible for her to swallow food. She had been surviving on intravenous fluids while her family appealed for financial assistance to purchase a medical stent that would have enabled her to eat.

The family needed US$880 for the stent and an estimated US$15,000 to cover the surgical procedure. Despite public appeals, the full amount was not raised in time.

A relative confirmed that Wedza passed away on Thursday morning at Masvingo Provincial Hospital, where she had been admitted.

“Yes she passed on yesterday morning around 10 am at Masvingo Provincial Hospital,” the relative said.

The family acknowledged that although some well-wishers contributed towards the appeal, the total required funds were never secured.

Relatives and friends are gathered at house number 3574 Mhizha Drive in Rujeko A, Masvingo, to mourn her passing. She is expected to be buried at Mangwandi Cemetery on Saturday.

Wedza’s death has once again drawn attention to the financial barriers many Zimbabweans face when seeking specialized medical care. Critics argue that essential procedures and equipment often remain beyond the reach of ordinary citizens, forcing families to rely on public fundraising for treatment that should be accessible within the national health system.

Her case underscores broader concerns about affordability, access to specialist care, and the strain on public hospitals, raising difficult questions about the state of healthcare delivery in the country.
