Following an assessment by the official manufacturer, it was determined that the silverware could not be restored to its full presentation standard.

A Trophy Steeped in History

In a statement, organisers said the decision to retire the trophy reflects the high presentation standards associated with one of sport’s most prestigious titles and aims to preserve the integrity and heritage of the championship.

The current trophy was introduced in 2015 to mark the evolution of the tournament into a six-team competition.

Standing 75cm tall and crafted from precious silver, it symbolises a championship whose origins date back to 1883.

While the accident is described as deeply unfortunate, officials noted that it adds another chapter to the long history of a tournament regarded as one of global sport’s most celebrated competitions.

Replacement and Legacy

As with most major international sporting events, an identical exhibition trophy exists and will be used for the remainder of the championship.

Organisers stressed that the prestige and recognition associated with winning the Six Nations remain unaffected.

A new trophy will now be commissioned using the same design as the original.

Importantly, materials salvaged from the damaged trophy will be incorporated into the new piece to ensure its history is respectfully carried forward.

The creation process is expected to require approximately 365 hours of skilled craftsmanship, with the new trophy set to be unveiled ahead of the 2027 tournament.
