Mnangagwa Imposes Total Ban on Unprocessed Mineral Exports

Tinashe Sambiri– The Emmerson Mnangagwa administration has clarified that the export of mineral ores is not suspended, but that a total ban on the export of all unprocessed minerals has been strictly implemented.

Government sources emphasized that the ban covers every mineral, including chrome, and warned that any attempts to bypass the restrictions would be treated as criminal activity.

“For clarity, the Government has not suspended the export of mineral ores; rather, we have implemented a total ban on the export of all unprocessed minerals,” government spokesperson Nick Mangwana said on Monday.

“If it was chrome, then it means some people misunderstood the ban, or it’s a criminal syndicate because not a single truck carrying ore should leave this country.”

The move is part of efforts to ensure that minerals are processed locally, adding value to the economy and creating jobs within Zimbabwe’s mining sector. Authorities have urged mining companies and transporters to comply fully with the regulations to avoid prosecution.

The government also warned the public to report any illegal mineral export activities, saying: “We will not tolerate smuggling or attempts to circumvent this ban. All unprocessed mineral exports must stop immediately.”

Industry stakeholders are now expected to focus on developing local processing plants and adhering to the new legal framework, ensuring that Zimbabwe benefits fully from its mineral wealth.
