FIFA president Gianni Infantino speaks on ZIFA’s new Munhumutapa Challenge Cup

The FIFA president Gianni Infantino has commented on ZIFA’s newly launched Munhumutapa Challenge Cup.

The tournament was launched in Harare on Wednesday and was attended by Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was the guest of honour.

The new competition adopts an FA Cup-style format, bringing together all registered teams from ZIFA’s structures — from the Premier Soccer League down to the lower divisions, including clubs from the Area Zones.

The inclusive format means teams from the grassroots level will have a chance to compete against top-flight sides in the same competition, making it Zimbabwe’s largest knockout competition, with the winners guaranteed a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Speaking in a recorded video, Infantino thanked all stakeholders who made the project possible, including President Mnangagwa and ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi.

“What a great day for football in your wonderful country,” he said. “The launch of the ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup is a momentous occasion and I congratulate you all on bringing this fabulous project.”

Infantino also commended the Government’s effort in sponsoring the tournament.

“I’m especially heartened by such strong government support and thank you Mr President for that,” he added.

The tournament is valued at US$25 million over a five-year period, with US$5 million set to be injected into the competition each season.

The Munhumutapa Challenge Cup also includes participation from the women’s league.
