Masvingo Man Who Shot Two Detectives Faces Decades Behind Bars

By A Correspondent – A 50-year-old man from Ndume Village under Chief Ndanga in Zaka, Daniel Munyanyi, has been sentenced to 72 years in prison after pleading guilty to a string of armed robberies across Masvingo Province.

Munyanyi appeared twice before the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 6 March 2026, facing separate charges of armed robbery and murder.

He first appeared before Magistrate Elizabeth Hanzi on murder charges under Section 47 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, with the case adjourned to 17 March 2026. Shortly afterwards, he appeared before Regional Magistrate Innocent Bepura on six counts of armed robbery committed in various parts of the province.

Munyanyi pleaded guilty to all six robbery charges and was sentenced to a combined 72 years, with 10 years suspended, leaving him to serve an effective 62 years behind bars.

In passing sentence, Magistrate Bepura described the crimes as “carried out under aggravating circumstances,” noting that Munyanyi used violence, firearms, and threats to intimidate victims.

The court heard that he often tied victims with shoelaces and, in some cases, inflicted injuries while threatening to kill them.

The robberies targeted both businesspeople and ordinary community members, with cash, vehicles, and other valuables stolen. Each charge was treated separately, and Munyanyi received 12 years for each count.

Court details of the robberies include:

June 2025: Robbed Chief Nhema (Rangarirai Bwawanda) of US$10,000, wristwatches, and jewelry, totaling US$12,560.

December 2025 (Zaka District): Tied up a businessman and stole US$4,500, airtime, groceries, and a Toyota Porte. Property valued at US$10,900, with US$5,500 later recovered.

December 2025 (Zaka): Robbed businessman Timothy Mandava of US$781, a Samsung S22 Ultra, and a Toyota Mark X. Property worth US$8,281, with US$7,000 recovered.

December 2025 (Bikita): Threatened Austin Fungai with a pistol, stealing US$300, airtime worth US$30, and three mobile phones valued at US$640. Nothing was recovered.

January 2026 (Zaka): Robbed Caroline Gwanyanya of US$300, five Samsung phones, and a hybrid Honda Fit valued at US$9,050. Property worth US$7,500 recovered.

January 2026 (Gutu District): Threatened Emmanuel Mbanda and stole an iPhone 13 Pro Max and Mazda car keys valued at US$1,900.

Authorities also confirmed that Munyanyi carried out the robberies with accomplices who remain at large.

His arrest followed a dramatic incident on 1 March in Zaka, during which Munyanyi allegedly shot and killed two police detectives while three others were injured. One officer later lost a leg following an amputation in hospital.

Munyanyi is yet to stand trial for the murder charges linked to the police killings.
