Iran withdraws from 2026 FIFA World Cup

Iran have withdrawn from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament will be staged in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Doyanmali says the security conditions and relations with the United States are not in place to allow them to attend the tournament.

The two countries are currently engaged in a war.

Doyanmali said in a statement: “Given that this corrupt government (USA) has murdered our leader, there are no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup.

“Two wars have been imposed on us in eight or nine months and several thousand of our citizens have been killed. Therefore, we have no chance of participating in this way.”

Iran, the first country to secure qualification for the World Cup, are in Group G along with Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.

The Middle Eastern country’s group-stage fixtures are all allocated to American cities, including Los Angeles and Seattle.
