Sports Correspondent – MADRID, March 10 – Atletico Madrid delivered a crushing blow to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday, racing to a 5-2 victory that leaves the Premier League side with a daunting task ahead in London.

Tottenham’s 22-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky suffered a night to forget in just his third appearance of the season, making two critical mistakes that allowed Atletico to surge ahead. Manager Igor Tudor substituted him in the 17th minute after Atletico had already scored three goals.

The scoring began early when Marcos Llorente capitalized on a slip from Kinsky to open the account after just six minutes. Antoine Griezmann then doubled the lead in the 14th minute following a misstep from Micky van de Ven, and Julian Alvarez made it 3-0 a minute later after another Kinsky error, marking one of the fastest three-goal bursts in Champions League knockout history.

Guglielmo Vicario replaced Kinsky, but Atletico’s momentum continued. Robin Le Normand headed in the fourth from a Griezmann free-kick rebound, though Pedro Porro pulled one back for Spurs in the 26th minute.

Julian Alvarez showcased his blistering pace to score Atletico’s fifth in the 55th minute, before Dominic Solanke converted a mistake by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak to make it 5-2.
“We’re thrilled with the win and the three-goal cushion, but we know there are still 90 minutes to play in London,” Alvarez said to Movistar Plus.

“Every detail matters in this competition. It won’t be easy, but we are focused on reaching the quarter-finals.”
