Nandipha Magudumana seeks funeral leave after mother Nokuzola Sekeleni’s death
Nandipha Magudumana is mourning the death of her mother, Nokuzola Sekeleni, who passed away on Thursday, 26 March at her home in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal.
The former celebrity aesthetics doctor, who is currently in custody at the Bizzah Makhate Correctional Centre, was informed of the devastating news by prison authorities and social workers.
Her family says she was left shaken as she began to process the loss while behind bars.
Speaking on behalf of the family, her brother Nkosinathi Sekeleni revealed the emotional toll the news has taken on her.
“[She] was informed by the prison bosses and social workers about our mother’s passing. She was taken aback when she heard the news. She is trying to come to terms with the loss of our mother, and we are hoping that she will be strong even though it is painful.
“We are also going to apply for her to be able to attend the funeral of our mother. We hope that everything that we request could be granted.”
Her father, Zolile Sekeleni, confirmed that preparations for the funeral are underway, expressing heartbreak that his wife’s passing comes while their daughter remains incarcerated.
Magudumana’s lawyer, Machini Motloung, has since moved to ensure she receives psychological support during this period, while also urging authorities to keep her updated on funeral arrangements.
Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo explained that inmates in such circumstances may apply for temporary release under strict conditions.
“In terms of the Correctional Services Act, 1998 (Act No. 111 of 1998), Section 44(1)(a) provides that a sentenced offender may, subject to prescribed conditions, be allowed to leave the correctional centre for a period determined by the National Commissioner in order to maintain family ties or for other humane purposes,” he said.
He added that each application is assessed on factors such as security classification, behaviour, and the nature of the bereavement, ensuring a balance between compassion and public safety.
The loss comes as Magudumana prepares to stand trial alongside convicted criminal Thabo Bester over the widely publicised 2022 prison escape.
She faces multiple charges, including fraud, corruption, money laundering, arson, and aiding in Bester’s escape after he allegedly faked his death in a prison cell fire.
As her legal battle looms, Magudumana is now also grappling with a deeply personal tragedy, with her family hoping authorities will grant her the chance to attend her mother’s funeral.
