“No Freedom, No Constitution”: Chamisa Slams Constitutional Amendment Bill

Tinashe Sambiri– Citizens leader Nelson Chamisa has raised alarm over the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill, warning that it threatens fundamental freedoms and undermines the country’s democratic framework.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Chamisa stressed the centrality of civil liberties in any constitutional process, declaring, “Without freedom of speech, there is no constitution to talk about.”

His remarks come amid growing debate over the Constitutional Amendment Bill, which seeks to extend the term of office of President Emmerson Mnangagwa beyond 2028. Critics argue that the move could erode democratic principles, while supporters maintain it is a lawful legislative process.

Chamisa warned that restricting citizens’ voices would render the constitution meaningless, emphasizing that public participation and open dialogue are essential in shaping the nation’s future.

“A constitution must reflect the will of the people, expressed freely and without fear,” he said.

The proposed amendments have sparked widespread discussion across the political divide, with observers closely monitoring developments as the debate over governance and constitutionalism intensifies.
