Chivayo’s Secret Trip To Tanzania Raises Concerns About Looting, Corruption
Tinashe Sambiri– Controversial Zanu PF-linked businessman Wicknell Chivayo has drawn criticism after reportedly sneaking into Tanzania’s State House to meet President Samia Suluhu Hassan, raising serious questions about transparency and propriety.
The visit, described by some Zanu PF supporters as a “courtesy call,” has instead sparked outrage among critics who accuse Chivayo of exploiting political connections for personal gain.
Zanu PF online activist Cleopas Mukungunugwa framed the meeting as a sign of growing confidence for Zimbabwean entrepreneurs to engage the region and explore investment opportunities.
He wrote: “Zimbabwean businessman Sir Wicknell Chivhayo’s courtesy visit to Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan at State House in Dar es Salaam reflects the growing confidence of Zimbabwean entrepreneurs to engage the region and explore strategic investment partnerships.”
However, observers argue that Chivayo’s “courtesy visit” is yet another example of a politically connected figure leveraging state diplomacy for private enrichment. The businessman’s controversial record with government tenders casts doubt on the legitimacy of the engagement.
“This kind of secretive and politically charged visit undermines public trust and raises serious questions about how Zanu PF-linked individuals use diplomatic platforms for personal benefit,” said one analyst who requested anonymity.
The optics of Chivayo meeting a foreign head of state without clear justification has intensified scrutiny of the Mnangagwa administration’s handling of business and politics.
Critics warn that these kinds of high-level engagements risk conflating public diplomacy with private enrichment, further eroding confidence in Zimbabwe’s governance and business ethics.
“This is not about advancing regional trade or African-led growth; it’s about a controversial figure using political clout to gain influence abroad while leaving ordinary Zimbabweans behind,” the analyst added.
The episode underscores ongoing concerns over the intertwining of political connections and business in Zimbabwe, raising red flags over accountability, propriety, and the use of state diplomacy for personal advantage.
