Alick Macheso’s Backing Vocalist Dies
By A Correspondent – The Zimbabwean music industry has been plunged into mourning following the death of Barnabas Mandipota, a longtime backing vocalist for sungura icon Alick Macheso.
Mandipota, who was part of the renowned Orchestra Mberikwazvo, reportedly passed away on Sunday. His death was confirmed by Macheso, who shared the heartbreaking news with fans and the public.
In a brief but emotional message, Macheso expressed the group’s deep sorrow, saying, “Impfa Nimulandi – Rufu Imbavha.”
He went on to notify relatives, friends, and supporters of the loss, stating, “Ku hama, shamwari nemadzi sahwira tine hurombo kukuzivisai kurasikirwa kwataitwa ne umwe wedu wataibata naye Barnabas Mandipota.”
The message also extended condolences to the Mandipota family, with Macheso adding, “Tinongoti ku pasi rese neku mhuri yekwa Mandipota, nyaradzwai naShe.”
Macheso indicated that further details surrounding Mandipota’s passing, including funeral arrangements, would be shared in due course. “Zvizhinji tichakuzivisai mukufamba kwenguva. Tatenda,” he said.
Mandipota’s death marks a significant loss to Orchestra Mberikwazvo, where he played a key role in shaping the group’s signature sound.
His contribution to sungura music and his presence alongside Macheso on stage earned him admiration from fans across Zimbabwe and beyond.
