ZHRC Backs Proposed Social Media Ban For Minors…
By A Correspondent – The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission has expressed support for a proposed policy to restrict underage children from accessing social media, citing the need to protect them from potential harm.
In a recent interview, ZHRC chairperson and spokesperson Jessie Majome said that although the Constitution guarantees access to information, such rights can be limited when it comes to children’s welfare.
Addressing the issue, Majome said, “As much as we protect children from exposure to physical harm, we also, in our constitution, permit limitation of access by children to harmful experiences that might not be physical fires, but they may be as harmful. So, the rights are balanced in that way.”
Her remarks come after Tatenda Mavetera recently announced that the government is drafting a Child Online Policy.
The proposed policy could see restrictions placed on minors’ use of platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram as part of efforts to shield children from online risks.
The development has sparked debate, with some backing tighter controls to protect children, while others warn of potential restrictions on access to information.
