Nehemiah Mutendi Declares Chivayo Money Is Clean
Tinashe Sambiri– Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi has publicly defended controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, insisting that his money is “clean” amid ongoing scrutiny over his business dealings.
Speaking during the Easter celebrations of the Zion Christian Church at Mbungo in Masvingo, which were attended by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Bishop Mutendi praised Chivayo for his philanthropic efforts.
“Wicknell Chivayo’s money is not dirty,” Mutendi said. “Wicknell Chivayo is a giver. He is helping us, and some people are saying, ‘Bishop, why are you accepting dirty money?’ My response is simple – this is not dirty money. Chivayo is doing great work.”
The bishop drew a comparison with international donations, noting, “Some of you are receiving donations from America, but you never say it’s dirty money.”
Mutendi’s statements highlight his support for Chivayo’s contributions to church projects and community initiatives, despite public controversy surrounding the businessman. The declaration is likely to stir further debate over the role of private donors in Zimbabwean social and religious programs.
Chivayo, known for his high-profile business dealings and large-scale philanthropy, has previously been criticised by some quarters for the source of his wealth, but Mutendi’s remarks position him firmly as a supporter of the businessman’s charitable work.
