La Liga has launched its first-ever (Jonarda Retro) Retro Matchday, transforming Spanish football into a nostalgic throwback from April 10–13, blending modern action with the look and feel of the 90s and early 2000s.
The campaign has turned Matchday 31 into a full nostalgic experience, with retro broadcast graphics, classic “LFP” branding, and vintage-style scoreboards bringing back the feel of the late 90s and early 2000s. Across the country, most clubs are wearing special-edition kits inspired by iconic shirts from their history, first unveiled earlier this year.
Even the finer details have followed suit.
Referees, led by Javier Alberola Rojas, are sporting throwback uniforms, while every match is being played with the Orbita Retro ball by PUMA, designed to resemble a classic 90s match ball.
The weekend has began with Real Madrid drawing 1-1 with Girona at the Santiago Bernabéu, setting the tone for a round of fixtures that continues across Spain.
While most of the league has embraced the full retro look, clubs like FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Getafe and Rayo Vallecano are not wearing special kits due to sponsorship and logistical reasons, though the nostalgic atmosphere remains present in every stadium.
With matches still to be played throughout the weekend, LaLiga’s bold initiative is not just a tribute to history, but a reminder that Spanish football’s legacy continues to shape its future.
