BULAWAYO–BEITBRIDGE ROAD — At least 18 people were killed on Thursday afternoon after a Toyota Quantum kombi erupted in flames and exploded along the busy Bulawayo–Beitbridge highway, police have confirmed.
The fatal incident occurred in the Much Binding area, between Chipangali and the Gwanda tollgate, during peak daytime traffic hours.
Authorities say the explosion happened between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, leaving the vehicle completely destroyed and scattering debris across the roadway. Images from the scene show a charred wreck reduced to its metal frame, with onlookers gathering as emergency responders moved in.
Suspected Explosives Trigger Blast
Police indicated that initial suspicions point to the kombi possibly carrying explosive materials, which may have ignited before triggering the devastating blast.
“Eighteen people have been confirmed dead. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the explosion,” police said in a preliminary statement.
The force added that further details would be released as forensic and accident reconstruction teams examine the scene.
Highway Horror
The Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road is a critical regional artery, linking Zimbabwe to South Africa, and is frequently used by cross-border transport vehicles, including passenger kombis and haulage trucks.
Thursday’s explosion has raised urgent questions over vehicle safety, cargo checks, and possible illegal transportation of hazardous materials along the route.
Scene of Devastation
Witnesses described a sudden, violent blast, followed by thick smoke and flames engulfing the vehicle within seconds. The intensity of the explosion reportedly left little chance of survival for those inside.
Emergency services attended the scene, while traffic flow was temporarily disrupted as authorities secured the area.
INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY
Police have launched a full-scale investigation, focusing on:
The origin and nature of the suspected explosives
The identity of the victims
Whether the vehicle was licensed to carry its cargo
Officials are expected to issue a detailed update once next-of-kin notifications and forensic processes are complete.
