By A Correspondent – The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed a devastating road traffic disaster in which 12 people lost their lives after a Toyota Quantum carrying 11 passengers exploded along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road.
In an official update, police said the incident occurred on 16 April 2026 at around 1245 hours at the 27-kilometre peg near Esigodini.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 16th April 2026 at around 1245 hours at the 27 kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road,” said the statement.
Authorities further confirmed the scale of the tragedy, noting that “12 people were killed after a Toyota Quantum carrying 11 passengers exploded.”
The police have since released the names of nine of the 12 victims who were formally identified by their next of kin.

Police said the bodies of the victims were taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

Authorities added that the cause of the explosion is still unknown and investigations are ongoing.
“The cause of the explosion is yet to be established. More details to be released in due course,” police said.
