Police Nab 140 Mahwindi Over Harassment Of Travellers

By A Correspondent– A total of 140 illegal transport touts, commonly known as mahwindi, have been arrested in Mutare since Monday following a coordinated security operation aimed at restoring order at the city’s transport ranks.

Manicaland police confirmed the arrests, saying the crackdown was carried out by a joint taskforce involving the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Zimbabwe National Army, and the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services.

“The operation is part of ongoing efforts to restore sanity at public transport ranks and curb criminal activities linked to illegal touting,” police said.

The enforcement blitz was launched on Monday at Sakubva Bus Terminus, which has been identified as one of the hotspots of disorderly conduct.

Authorities said the situation at transport ranks had worsened in recent weeks, with reports of harassment of passengers, intimidation of commuter operators, and vendors being forced to pay illegal fees.

“The environment had become chaotic, with touts allegedly extorting money from transport operators and interfering with the smooth flow of passengers,” police added.

The joint security team says the operation will continue until order is fully restored at all affected transport points in Mutare.
