Sithelo Shozi and other influencers free from being investigated by SIU
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has dismissed viral claims suggesting that influencers Cyan Boujee, Sithelo Shozi and MaWhoo are under investigation over alleged links to corruption involving Ekurhuleni funds.
The speculation began circulating on social media after a user alleged that the SIU had widened its probe into Ekurhuleni City manager Kagiso Lerutla, claiming the investigation now included several high-profile personalities.
According to the post, authorities were supposedly examining whether public funds had been diverted into private accounts and used to acquire luxury assets through third parties.
The claims quickly gained traction online, prompting calls from some users for lifestyle audits targeting public figures.
However, the SIU moved swiftly to set the record straight, branding the allegations as false.
In a statement shared on X, the unit made it clear that it does not investigate individuals directly.
“FAKE NEWS! #KnowYourSIU| 1. The SIU does not target people, nor do we investigate people. We investigate procurement processes in State Institutions and all levels of government departments, and it’s through these processes that we find people who are responsible. In simple terms, we follow the money, and the money leads us to people,” part of the statement read.
The unit further explained that it cannot initiate investigations on its own.
Instead, cases are triggered by tip-offs or formal complaints, which are first assessed before a request is submitted to the President for approval.
“2. The law that governs the SIU states that the SIU does not identify its own investigations. We receive allegations, which we then assess to see if falls within our mandate, and we write a motivation for a proclamation to the President for authorisation,” the statement continued.
While distancing itself from the viral claims, the SIU encouraged members of the public to report suspected corruption through its official hotline and email channels, stressing the role of whistleblowers in uncovering wrongdoing.
