FIFA is set to introduce revised yellow card regulations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in a move aimed at improving fairness and reducing the impact of minor infractions on player availability.
The changes will primarily focus on how yellow card suspensions are handled during the tournament. Under the current system, players risk suspension after accumulating a set number of bookings across matches, often leading to key players missing crucial knockout fixtures.
For the 2026 edition, FIFA is expected to implement a rule where yellow cards are reset at an earlier stage of the competition. This means players who pick up cautions during the group stages or early knockout rounds will have a reduced risk of suspension in the later, more decisive matches such as the semi-finals and final.
The governing body believes the adjustment will ensure that the biggest games feature the best players, rather than being affected by disciplinary carry-overs from earlier rounds. It also aligns with similar systems already used in continental competitions, including UEFA tournaments.
In addition to the reset rule, FIFA is also considering stricter enforcement on time-wasting and dissent, which could lead to an increase in yellow cards for such offences. Referees will be encouraged to clamp down on delays and unsporting behaviour in order to maintain the flow of matches.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the first edition to feature 48 teams. With the expanded format bringing more matches and increased competition, FIFA sees the disciplinary rule adjustments as necessary to maintain balance and fairness throughout the tournament.
Further details on the implementation of the new yellow card rules are expected to be confirmed ahead of the tournament.
