The GSMA<\/strong>, together with a coalition of major technology and telecom partners, has announced a continent-wide collaboration<\/strong> to strengthen Africa\u2019s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem<\/strong> by developing inclusive African AI language models<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The initiative was unveiled at MWC Kigali 2025<\/strong>, under the banner \u201cAI Language Models in Africa, by Africa, for Africa.\u201d<\/em> It brings together leading telecom operators \u2014 Airtel, Axian Telecom, Ethio Telecom, MTN, Orange, and Vodacom<\/strong> \u2014 alongside Cassava Technologies, Lelapa AI, Pawa AI, Masakhane African Languages Hub, Qhala, Awarri, the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC)<\/strong>, and the World Sandbox Alliance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The collaboration aims to \u201ccrowd in resources and expertise\u201d<\/strong> across four critical pillars \u2014 data, compute, talent, and policy<\/strong> \u2014 to ensure African languages, cultures, and knowledge are properly represented in the digital age.<\/p>\n \u201cAfrica\u2019s diversity of languages and cultures is one of our greatest strengths, yet it has too often been overlooked in the development of global AI systems,\u201d said Angela Wamola<\/strong>, GSMA Head of Africa. \u201cThis initiative is about turning that challenge into an opportunity \u2014 building African-led AI capacity and ensuring Africa shapes the digital future on its own terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n According to the GSMA\u2019s AI for Africa<\/em> report series, over 2,000 languages<\/strong> are spoken across the continent, yet only a fraction are supported<\/strong> in existing digital systems or large language models (LLMs). This imbalance, the GSMA warns, risks widening digital and economic divides<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The initiative\u2019s objective is to develop AI language models trained on African languages and local data<\/strong>, enabling the creation of tools and applications tailored to African social, cultural, and economic realities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Use cases could include:<\/p>\n The collaboration follows a GSMA-led feasibility study<\/strong> confirming that African-led language models are technically feasible and economically viable<\/strong>, provided there is collective investment and policy alignment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n To ensure sustained impact, dedicated working groups<\/strong> will be established to drive measurable progress across key focus areas \u2014 data quality and access<\/strong>, computing infrastructure<\/strong>, AI talent development<\/strong>, and policy coordination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Participating partners will showcase outcomes and share progress<\/strong> at upcoming GSMA events to maintain accountability and transparency.<\/p>\n The GSMA has also issued an open call for ecosystem partners<\/strong> \u2014 including startups, academia, creative industries, civil society, and global technology players \u2014 to join and contribute<\/strong> to the project.<\/p>\n This pan-African initiative builds on growing global interest in inclusive AI. In July 2025, Google announced major investments<\/strong> to advance AI tools supporting over 40 African languages<\/strong>, while African startups such as Lelapa AI<\/strong> and Pawa AI<\/strong> continue pioneering local language models.<\/p>\n The GSMA\u2019s coordinated effort signals a continental shift from AI adoption to AI creation<\/strong>, ensuring Africa\u2019s linguistic and cultural diversity forms part of the foundation of the world\u2019s digital future<\/strong> \u2014 not an afterthought.<\/p>\n \u201cBy working together,\u201d Wamola said, \u201cwe can make AI more inclusive, more relevant, and more reflective of the world we live in.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n \n
