{"id":39836,"date":"2025-10-27T06:21:05","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T06:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eduzim.co.zw\/news\/?p=39836"},"modified":"2025-10-27T06:21:05","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T06:21:05","slug":"gsma-launches-pan-african-collaboration-to-build-inclusive-ai-language-models","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eduzim.co.zw\/news\/2025\/10\/27\/gsma-launches-pan-african-collaboration-to-build-inclusive-ai-language-models\/","title":{"rendered":"GSMA Launches Pan-African Collaboration to Build Inclusive AI Language Models"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The <strong>GSMA<\/strong>, together with a coalition of major technology and telecom partners, has announced a <strong>continent-wide collaboration<\/strong> to strengthen Africa\u2019s <strong>artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem<\/strong> by developing <strong>inclusive African AI language models<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative was unveiled at <strong>MWC Kigali 2025<\/strong>, under the banner <em>\u201cAI Language Models in Africa, by Africa, for Africa.\u201d<\/em> It brings together leading telecom operators \u2014 <strong>Airtel, Axian Telecom, Ethio Telecom, MTN, Orange, and Vodacom<\/strong> \u2014 alongside <strong>Cassava Technologies, Lelapa AI, Pawa AI, Masakhane African Languages Hub, Qhala, Awarri, the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC)<\/strong>, and the <strong>World Sandbox Alliance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Addressing Africa\u2019s Language Gap in AI<\/h3>\n<p>The collaboration aims to <strong>\u201ccrowd in resources and expertise\u201d<\/strong> across four critical pillars \u2014 <strong>data, compute, talent, and policy<\/strong> \u2014 to ensure African languages, cultures, and knowledge are properly represented in the digital age.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAfrica\u2019s diversity of languages and cultures is one of our greatest strengths, yet it has too often been overlooked in the development of global AI systems,\u201d said <strong>Angela Wamola<\/strong>, GSMA Head of Africa. \u201cThis initiative is about turning that challenge into an opportunity \u2014 building African-led AI capacity and ensuring Africa shapes the digital future on its own terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the GSMA\u2019s <em>AI for Africa<\/em> report series, <strong>over 2,000 languages<\/strong> are spoken across the continent, yet <strong>only a fraction are supported<\/strong> in existing digital systems or large language models (LLMs). This imbalance, the GSMA warns, risks <strong>widening digital and economic divides<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building African-Led AI Capacity<\/h3>\n<p>The initiative\u2019s objective is to develop <strong>AI language models trained on African languages and local data<\/strong>, enabling the creation of tools and applications tailored to <strong>African social, cultural, and economic realities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Use cases could include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AI-powered translation tools<\/strong> that enable cross-border communication.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chatbots and virtual assistants<\/strong> that understand and respond in local dialects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Education and government services<\/strong> powered by AI that reflects African contexts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The collaboration follows a <strong>GSMA-led feasibility study<\/strong> confirming that <strong>African-led language models are technically feasible and economically viable<\/strong>, provided there is <strong>collective investment and policy alignment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collective Leadership and Accountability<\/h3>\n<p>To ensure sustained impact, <strong>dedicated working groups<\/strong> will be established to drive measurable progress across key focus areas \u2014 <strong>data quality and access<\/strong>, <strong>computing infrastructure<\/strong>, <strong>AI talent development<\/strong>, and <strong>policy coordination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Participating partners will <strong>showcase outcomes and share progress<\/strong> at upcoming GSMA events to maintain accountability and transparency.<\/p>\n<p>The GSMA has also issued an open call for <strong>ecosystem partners<\/strong> \u2014 including startups, academia, creative industries, civil society, and global technology players \u2014 to <strong>join and contribute<\/strong> to the project.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Turning Point for Africa\u2019s Digital Inclusion<\/h3>\n<p>This pan-African initiative builds on growing global interest in inclusive AI.
