The agency\u2019s <strong>Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR)<\/strong> \u2014 introduced in 2019 \u2014 evolved into a full <strong>Data Protection Commission<\/strong> following the signing of the <strong>Data Protection Bill<\/strong> into law in <strong>2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This framework, the first of its kind in Africa, established <strong>\u201cdevelopmental regulation\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 rules that promote innovation while safeguarding citizens and national sovereignty.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to be passive participants,\u201d Abdullahi explained. \u201cWe want AI that serves humanity and strengthens governance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>NITDA\u2019s <strong>National Artificial Intelligence Strategy<\/strong>, launched in 2023, marked <strong>Sub-Saharan Africa\u2019s first national AI framework<\/strong> focused on responsible and inclusive systems. Together with Kenya, Egypt, and South Africa, <strong>Nigeria is now positioning West Africa as the continent\u2019s next AI hub.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building a Digitally Skilled Nation<\/h3>\n<p>At the heart of Nigeria\u2019s transformation is a <strong>human capital revolution<\/strong>. The <strong>National Digital Literacy Framework<\/strong> targets <strong>95% digital literacy by 2030<\/strong>, a goal unmatched on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Working with partners like <strong>Cisco Academy<\/strong>, the <strong>Ministry of Education<\/strong>, and the <strong>National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)<\/strong>, NITDA has already upskilled <strong>over 23,000 public servants<\/strong> and continues to train <strong>millions of students and informal workers<\/strong> each year.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTechnology makes our lives better, but people make technology better,\u201d Abdullahi noted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>By embedding digital education from kindergarten through university, Nigeria is on track to become <strong>Africa\u2019s largest digital talent hub<\/strong> \u2014 supplying a new generation of tech-skilled innovators to local and global markets.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital Sovereignty: Charting Africa\u2019s Independent Future<\/h3>\n<p>For Abdullahi, the ultimate goal is <strong>digital sovereignty<\/strong> \u2014 ensuring that Nigeria controls its own data, builds indigenous technologies, and sustains innovation independently.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cToday, we don\u2019t have sovereignty when it comes to digital,\u201d he said. \u201cBut our legacy goal is to build the infrastructure, talent, and cloud sovereignty that will make Nigeria and Africa self-reliant.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Initiatives like the <strong>90,000km Project Bridge fibre rollout<\/strong>, <strong>cloud-first policy<\/strong>, and <strong>local content mandates<\/strong> reflect this ambition, turning Nigeria into a <strong>continental benchmark for digital governance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nigeria\u2019s Blueprint for Africa\u2019s Tech Future<\/h3>\n<p>The results are tangible: under NITDA\u2019s leadership, Nigeria has become a model for <strong>policy-led innovation<\/strong>, <strong>youth empowerment<\/strong>, and <strong>digital diplomacy<\/strong>.
