A day earlier, Israeli raids in Nabatieh killed four people, according to Lebanon\u2019s Health Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Inside Lebanon, the continued bombardment has heightened fears of a renewed war, as Israeli and United States officials press the Lebanese government to force Hezbollah to disarm.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli military intelligence has claimed in recent days that Hezbollah is attempting to rebuild its military capabilities. A Hezbollah spokesperson denied reports of expanded military activity or attempts to restore its elite units.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael fabricates stories and claims to justify its attacks,\u201d the spokesperson told Lebanon\u2019s L\u2019Orient Today newspaper on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah was severely weakened after the Israeli escalation in September 2024, which killed its longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah. Since the November ceasefire, the group has responded to Israeli attacks only once.<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah officials have repeatedly said the group will not disarm, saying that relinquishing its weapons would leave southern Lebanon exposed to an Israeli invasion.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"baalbek-still-under-fire\">Baalbek still under fire<\/h2>\n<p>Nearly a year after Israel\u2019s wide-scale bombing campaign across Lebanon, residents in the eastern Bekaa Valley say they are still living under persistent Israeli threats.<\/p>\n<p>In Baalbek, a city known for its Roman ruins and considered part of Hezbollah\u2019s heartland, Israeli strikes continue to target what the Israeli military describes as Hezbollah\u2019s \u201clogistical and operational base\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But many civilians also remain under constant bombardment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is happening now isn\u2019t short of a war. It is a war,\u201d Abu Ali, a resident of Baalbek, told Al Jazeera. \u201cThere is so much talk about targeting Baalbek, and this is scaring people away,\u201d added another resident, Ali Chokair.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the Bekaa region remains scarred by last year\u2019s Israeli strikes, leaving one of Lebanon\u2019s poorest areas struggling to rebuild.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lebanon-under-pressure-to-negotiate\">Lebanon under pressure to negotiate<\/h2>\n<p>Israeli and US officials are pressing for Hezbollah\u2019s disarmament, with US ambassador Tom Barrack urging the armed group to begin a dialogue with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Sunday that the army would \u201cact as necessary\u201d if Lebanon failed to ensure Hezbollah handed over its weapons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect the Lebanese government to fulfil its commitment \u2013 to disarm Hezbollah \u2013 but it is clear we will exercise our right of self-defence under the terms of the ceasefire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has said the country has \u201cno choice but to negotiate\u201d with Israel to avoid a wider conflict. But many in Baalbek and southern Lebanon oppose any talks that could lead to Hezbollah\u2019s disarmament,<\/p>\n<p>Hussein Osman, who runs a restaurant in Baalbek, refused to flee when the Israeli army ordered residents to leave during last year\u2019s war.
