Durban used to be a place for lots of fun and entertainment.”

Big Nuz, made up of the late Mampintsha, R Mashesha, and Danger, rose to fame in the mid-2000s and became pioneers of Durban’s mainstream sound.

Their energetic music videos, often shot in the city, showcased beach life, nightlife and township culture, turning Durban into a dream destination for many young South Africans.

However, the nostalgic celebration sparked debate after DJ Tira reacted to the post with a pointed comment: “And who brought them to Durban????”

The Afrotainment boss went on to explain his role in the group’s journey, suggesting that Big Nuz’s career trajectory changed after relocating from Johannesburg.

“They were hustling in JHB trying some kwaito/hip hop sound. When they touched down in Durban… Durban was never the same,” he wrote.

While some social media users felt DJ Tira was inserting himself unnecessarily into a conversation about Big Nuz’s talent, many others came to his defence and credited him for his contribution to the group’s success.

“One and only, Makoya Bearings!!!
