Defends Controversial Central Committee Co-option

Tinashe Sambiri– Presidential Advisor Dr Paul Tungwarara has spoken out following his co-option into ZANU PF’s powerful Central Committee, a move that has stirred debate in political circles.

Tungwarara’s elevation into the ruling party’s highest decision-making body outside Congress came through co-option by the Manicaland Province, before being endorsed by the Politburo in Harare on Wednesday — a process critics often describe as opaque and dominated by party insiders.

The development was announced by party spokesperson Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa.

Responding to his appointment, Tungwarara thanked President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the party leadership for what some observers see as a strategic consolidation of loyalists within the party’s top structures.

“This is a responsibility I do not take lightly,” Tungwarara said.

“I pledge to carry this responsibility with diligence, humility, and unwavering commitment,” he added.

His appointment comes at a time when Zimbabwe continues to face economic and governance challenges, with critics questioning whether reshuffling positions within party ranks translates into tangible national progress.

Tungwarara linked his new role to the government’s Vision 2030 agenda.

“As Zimbabwe advances towards the realization of Vision 2030, it is time for all of us to put our hands on deck, to work collectively, and to ensure that our nation achieves the prosperity and development that our people deserve,” he said.

However, some political analysts argue that repeated appointments of close allies into influential party organs raise concerns about internal democracy and merit-based advancement within ZANU PF.

With his co-option, Tungwarara now sits at the core of the party’s strategic decision-making machinery, reinforcing the growing influence of figures closely aligned to President Mnangagwa.

 <span id="wordads-inline-marker"
