{"id":51185,"date":"2026-02-28T12:55:26","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T12:55:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eduzim.co.zw\/news\/?p=51185"},"modified":"2026-02-28T12:55:26","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T12:55:26","slug":"2026-02-28-were-not-concerned-about-the-pa-in-eastern-cape-john-steenhuisen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eduzim.co.zw\/news\/2026\/02\/28\/2026-02-28-were-not-concerned-about-the-pa-in-eastern-cape-john-steenhuisen\/","title":{"rendered":"We\u2019re not concerned about the PA in Eastern Cape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-1669381584671856\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Africa tv video display -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1669381584671856\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3579572842\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\">\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Outgoing DA leader John Steenhuisen has thrown down the gauntlet in the Eastern Cape, telling voters the province is collapsing not by accident, but by choice, urging them to change their choice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Addressing party supporters at the DA\u2019s Eastern Cape congress in Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday, Steenhuisen said that while the party may be watching the rise of the Patriotic Alliance in other provinces with interest, it is not concerned about its prospects in the Eastern Cape. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He pointed to the DA\u2019s retention of its wards in recent by-elections in Kouga and Nelson Mandela Bay as proof of its continued support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He accused the ANC in the province of presiding over decay while residents battle unemployment, water shortages and crumbling roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the DA gets into government, safety and security happen, dignity happens, and when the DA gets into government, growth happens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAll of these things can happen here in the Eastern Cape, but the people here need to vote for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThese things don\u2019t happen by accident. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DA Leader Addresses Eastern Cape Provincial Congress 2026!\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mP7uTYAIuO4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cYou won\u2019t get a job by accident, your children won\u2019t get a decent education by accident, your potholes won\u2019t magically be fixed by accident. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAll of those things you can and have so much more, but you have to vote for it, just like the people of Kouga voted for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cLook at Makana, a municipality now that doesn\u2019t have water and where the residents, if they want service delivery, have to go to court. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cLook at Inxuba Yethemba municipality, a key agricultural corridor, yet it is in stagnation with infrastructure backlogs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cLook at Dr Beyers Naude, it\u2019s facing financial distress, governance instability and collapsing trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">During his speech, he also dismissed the town renaming debates as \u201clazy politics\u201d that will not put water in taps, electricity in homes or jobs in the hands of the unemployed.<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"\" role=\"blockquote\" class=\"c-stack b-article-body__blockquote\" data-style-direction=\"vertical\" data-style-justification=\"start\" data-style-alignment=\"unset\" data-style-inline=\"false\" data-style-wrap=\"nowrap\">\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The people in this province are tired because their children are sitting at home, unemployed, without jobs, and the worst thing is to see on TV how the ANC and the PA are eating the money belonging to the people of this province.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe people in this province are tired because their children are sitting at home, unemployed, without jobs, and the worst thing is to see on TV how the ANC and the PA are eating the money belonging to the people of this province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got an unemployment crisis. How do you build a future without a job? There\u2019s no electricity, no water, no work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Steenhuisen said people in the province need to get real because jobs will not grow in broken municipalities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cInvestors don\u2019t come and invest in a town where the infrastructure is broken. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBusiness doesn\u2019t expand where roads collapse, and red tape and incompetence stand in the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">During the congress, Andrew Whitfield was re-elected unopposed as provincial leader, taking up the position for a second term. He serves as an MP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He will be supported by two deputy provincial leaders: MPL Vicky Knoetze and MP Mlindi Nhanha.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Cassim, a DA MPL, has also been elected provincial chairperson for a second term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He will be assisted by three deputy provincial chairpersons: Baxolile Nodada, Chantel King and Rano Kayser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Giving his victory speech, Whitfield said if residents wanted to get the province working, they had to secure the Bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe need a DA government led by a mayor who isn\u2019t scared of working.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cNow, if you are a voter in Nelson Mandela Bay and you don\u2019t think the DA can get things done, just ask the people of the DA majority-governed Kouga municipality right next door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cKouga is our governance blueprint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSince 2016, DA-led governance in Kouga has demonstrated that clean, accountable and stable government changes lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He said the party\u2019s rise from just 1.7% of the vote 32 years ago to its current level represented a remarkable achievement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe should all be proud. But it is also something for us to reflect upon with cautious optimism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhy do I say cautious optimism? Because winning elections is one thing, but delivering results is where the rubber hits the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe must not take for granted the journey which got us here, nor should we be complacent about the journey that lies ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe DA is held to a higher standard than any other political party, sometimes an impossible standard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBut this is a good thing.
