By A Correspondent \u2013 President Nelson Chamisa has strongly condemned what he describes as a surge in violent attacks targeting citizens opposed to proposed constitutional amendments, including an assault on Lovemore Madhuku and members of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA).<\/p>\n
In a statement issued through his Bureau of Communications on Sunday, Chamisa said he \u201cstrongly and unequivocally condemns the escalating wave of brutal attacks, beatings, and violent intimidation unleashed against citizens who have dared to oppose these illegal constitutional amendments.\u201d<\/p>\n
He argued that the incidents are not random acts of disorder but part of a calculated effort to intimidate dissenting voices. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we are witnessing is not isolated misconduct, nor is it sporadic disorder. It is an orchestrated campaign designed to instil fear, suffocate the will of the people, silence their voice, and strip citizens of their constitutional authority,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n
Chamisa maintained that the constitutional amendments in question are unlawful and should be resisted. \u201cThese illegal amendments must be firmly opposed. Terror, and every act of terror, must be unequivocally condemned,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to Chamisa, the situation reflects deeper governance challenges facing the country. \u201cThe crisis in Zimbabwe is fundamentally a crisis of governance, and this constitutional amendment stands as its clearest manifestation,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
He further criticised what he called a shift from democratic engagement to repression. \u201cWhen those in power abandon persuasion for persecution, and dialogue for brutality, they reveal a glaring confession of weakness, evidence of eroded public trust, diminished legitimacy, and a collapsing social contract,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Chamisa added that the use of force signals insecurity within leadership structures. \u201cResorting to violence as a tool of coercion is proof of lost confidence and lack of citizen support. A leadership secure in its mandate does not fear dissent; it engages it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emphasising the importance of the rule of law, he said, \u201cNo one is above the law. The law must shield every citizen equally, not serve as a weapon for the powerful and a burden for the powerless. Justice must operate without fear or favour.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chamisa called on Zimbabweans to unite in confronting what he described as a worsening constitutional and governance crisis. \u201cPresident Chamisa urges all citizens to work together and stand united against the decay of governance and the deepening constitutional crisis confronting our nation, working collectively to restore dignity, constitutionalism, justice, and protection for all,\u201d the statement said.
He concluded with an appeal for collective action: \u201cTogether, we, the citizens, must resolve the governance and constitutional crisis facing our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
