Bulawayo Activist Withdraws Court Case Against Mnangagwa \u2013 Is the 2030 Agenda Winning?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
By A Correspondent \u2013 Bulawayo-based political activist Mbuso Fuzwayo and his pressure group, Ibhetshu Likazulu, have officially withdrawn their Constitutional Court challenge against the proposed Constitutional Amendment Number 3, which seeks to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s term beyond 2028.<\/p>\n
The withdrawal takes effect immediately.<\/p>\n
Fuzwayo, who serves as Secretary General of Ibhetshu Likazulu, cited an \u201cunrelenting smear campaign\u201d targeting both his leadership and the organisation\u2019s reputation as the reason for the decision.
\u201cIbhetshu Likazulu would like to inform its stakeholders and the public of its decision to withdraw with immediate effect its court case that challenges the 2030 Agenda that has subsequently been set as Constitutional Amendment Number 3,\u201d Fuzwayo said.<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cIt is a difficult decision we had to take following advice from some of our stakeholders concerned in light of unrelenting smear campaign to soil the reputation of the organization and myself as its secretary general in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the withdrawal, Fuzwayo insisted that the move should not be interpreted as abandoning opposition to the constitutional changes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis termination of the court route does not in any way mean that as Ibhetshu Likazulu we are abandoning our strong opposition to the 2030 agenda and its mutilation of the constitution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue the fight by other means together with other constitution defenders who have made a stand against, among other things, the extension of President Mnangagwa\u2019s term beyond 2028. In that regard, we support colleagues who have also taken the matter to court, especially those represented by Professor Lovemore Madhuku.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fuzwayo further stated that their court application had been undermined by a campaign of propaganda aimed at sowing division, mistrust, and suspicion among members and the public.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt no time did we ever have an illusion that this struggle would be easy, but we shall soldier on and remain focused. Nothing and absolutely nothing can change our set goals and the fight for justice and the upholding of the rule of law and respect of human rights in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n
The setbacks we suffer do not discourage us, but they strengthen our resolve and commitment to our goals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Critics had accused Fuzwayo of fronting a \u201csham\u201d court application designed to fail, thereby creating a legal opening for the proposed amendment. Fuzwayo strongly rejected the claims, explaining that the controversy arose after a draft version of their Constitutional Court application was leaked online while still being finalised.<\/p>\n
The case was originally brought before the Constitutional Court to contest the ruling ZANU-PF\u2019s plans to extend Mnangagwa\u2019s tenure, but Fuzwayo reaffirmed that the fight against the amendment continues through other avenues of activism and collaboration with fellow constitution defenders.<\/p>\n
