Guruve Serial Killer Anymore Zvitsva Seeks Forgiveness From First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
Tinashe Sambiri\u2013 The nation was left stunned after the horrific murder of 25 people in Guruve, an incident that has left deep scars on the community. <\/p>\n
On Friday, First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa personally visited Anymore Zvitsva, the alleged serial killer, at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison in Harare, in a bid to confront the man behind the shocking killings.<\/p>\n
The attacks sent waves of trauma through Guruve, forcing some families to abandon their homes as they struggled to cope with the aftermath. <\/p>\n
Inside Zimbabwe\u2019s most secure prison, Dr Mnangagwa, visibly shaken, met with Zvitsva, seeking to understand the mind of the man responsible for the brutal crimes. She had previously visited the affected families in Guruve, witnessing firsthand the toll the murders had taken.
\u201cI was deeply troubled in my mind before deciding to see Zvitsva face to face,\u201d Dr Mnangagwa said. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe execution of these murders was so shocking that entire communities have left their homesteads. I felt it was necessary to hear from the horse\u2019s mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n
Seated in a wheelchair, Zvitsva recounted his grisly acts in detail. He described cooking and consuming human flesh, cutting off body parts\u2014including breasts, which he claimed he sold to a local miner for rituals\u2014and giving victims\u2019 blood to self-styled prophets.<\/p>\n
He admitted to burning some remains to ashes and even mixing them with cooking oil for use as a lotion in fortune-telling, while some ashes were used in constructing a shop, based on beliefs that it would bring wealth.<\/p>\n
Zvitsva detailed the weapons he used\u2014knives, spears, and axes\u2014and explained how he evaded both police and villagers by walking barefoot and avoiding roads to prevent being traced.<\/p>\n
When asked why he was arrested, Zvitsva admitted without hesitation: \u201cI committed crimes of killing people, rape and robberies in Guruve, Zimbabwe.\u201d<\/p>\n
Auxillia Mnangagwa pressed him for details about his first killing. Zvitsva described it as initially a theft that spiraled into murder.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s hard for me to understand how I started this,\u201d he said. \u201cI was hungry and went to break into a home looking for food. There was no one, so I stole about 10 kilograms of mealie-meal. I returned later that evening, thinking the woman might have cash. Around 10 pm, I knocked, and when she asked who it was, I replied that she had been robbed.\u201d<\/p>\n
He explained that the confrontation turned violent when the woman tried to chase him away.<\/p>\n
\u201cI panicked and realised that if I did not attack first, I would be overpowered,\u201d he said. \u201cI then attacked her with the back of a knife on the forehead.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Zvitsva, the encounter escalated into a struggle which eventually ended with the woman being fatally stabbed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is when I realised I had stabbed someone. This was when my journey of killing people began in 2024,\u201d he said.
He also spoke about disturbing dreams that followed the first killing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe day I killed her, she appeared in a dream saying moto wawabatidza uyu haudzimwe yatova ngozi yakaparwa nevakuru venyu dzinza renyu hameno uchazviita sei?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Zvitsva told the First Lady that fear and paranoia soon took over his life.
\u201cThe evil spirit started after my first killing and never left me,\u201d he said.
He claimed that as police began searching for him, he spent long periods hiding in bushes and forests, avoiding roads and travelling quietly to escape detection.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would never walk openly, I would make sure I was hiding always like someone trying to catch a wild animal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Despite the shocking confessions, Zvitsva repeatedly asked for forgiveness from the victims\u2019 families and the nation.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am Anymore Zvitsva from Guruve. I committed heinous crimes. I killed women, children and other men. May you have mercy for all my wrongdoings,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am trying to understand how I ended up doing these things. To all the families I wronged, may you please find it in your hearts to forgive me. Even to you, First Lady, His Excellency the President and the entire nation, I am sorry for my deeds. Find it in your hearts to forgive me.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the visit, the First Lady asked Zvitsva what kind of punishment he believed he deserved as he awaits judgment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have nothing to say. It is up to the State, which knows,\u201d he replied.
For the people of Guruve, however, the wounds remain fresh. While Zvitsva has asked for forgiveness, families who lost loved ones continue to grapple with grief and trauma as they try to rebuild their lives after the devastating killings.<\/p>\n
