Mwonzora: Zanu PF Is Tormenting Us<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
Tinashe Sambiri\u2013 MDC president Douglas Mwonzora has alleged that supporters of ZANU PF disrupted a party function held in Bulawayo on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Mwonzora also criticised the police for what he described as a failure to act when the disturbance occurred, saying officers only intervened later to order MDC members to disperse.<\/p>\n
The incident happened during a gathering organised by the MDC Women\u2019s Assembly to commemorate International Women\u2019s Day, which had been postponed earlier.<\/p>\n
According to Mwonzora, a group of about 20 individuals believed to be ZANU PF supporters attempted to enter the venue and interfere with the proceedings.<\/p>\n
The meeting was attended by Women\u2019s Assembly chairperson Constance Chihururu and the party\u2019s national women\u2019s organiser, Nomatter Munyayi.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe group that attacked the MDC sometime last year is the one that came, only that they were more than the people that attacked us. They were about 20,\u201d said Mwonzora.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey tried to get in to disturb the meeting held by the Women\u2019s Assembly. The MDC Women\u2019s Assembly was holding a commemoration for International Women\u2019s Day on Saturday in Bulawayo.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mwonzora said several police officers were present at the scene but allegedly did not take action to stop the group from disrupting the event.<\/p>\n
He said authorities later instructed MDC members to leave the venue before 2pm, a move that resulted in the cancellation of a press conference that had been scheduled for the afternoon.<\/p>\n
The opposition leader further claimed the disturbance was part of what he described as ZANU PF\u2019s broader strategy to prevent opposition groups from organising against a proposed constitutional amendment that could extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s current term by two additional years.<\/p>\n
Mwonzora maintained that his party would continue to resist the proposed amendment despite the challenges.<\/p>\n
He also accused law enforcement authorities of applying the law unevenly, alleging that opposition activities are often restricted while ZANU PF gatherings proceed without interference.<\/p>\n
The development comes shortly after another political event in Bulawayo was halted.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, police reportedly stopped a press briefing organised by the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) that had been scheduled to take place in the city.<\/p>\n
