Deadly Livestock Threat: Farmers Urged to Act as Lumpy Skin Disease Spreads<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Farmers are being urged to remain vigilant and take immediate action as cases of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) continue to pose a serious threat to cattle health and productivity.
Lumpy Skin Disease is a viral infection that primarily affects cattle, with symptoms that can severely impact both animal welfare and farm output.<\/p>\n
According to Dr Trywell Muzerengi, early identification of the disease is critical in controlling its spread.<\/p>\n
Animals infected with LSD typically develop \u201cfirm raised skin nodules around the head, neck, genitals and limbs,\u201d alongside \u201cnasal and ocular discharges.\u201d Affected cattle may also show a \u201creluctance to move and eat,\u201d which can quickly lead to deterioration in their overall condition.<\/p>\n
Other warning signs include \u201cenlarged superficial lymph nodes\u201d and a noticeable \u201cdrop in milk production,\u201d a major concern for dairy farmers. In severe cases, \u201cabortion may occur,\u201d further compounding losses.<\/p>\n
As the disease progresses, the nodules can worsen significantly. Dr Muzerengi notes that these \u201cnodules may become necrotic and ulcerate,\u201d often leading to \u201csecondary infection of skin ulcerations,\u201d which complicates recovery.<\/p>\n
The incubation period for Lumpy Skin Disease ranges \u201cbetween 4 and 14 days post-infection.\u201d During this time, infected animals may not immediately show symptoms, allowing the disease to spread unnoticed within herds.<\/p>\n
Once symptoms begin, cattle often experience an initial high fever of up to 41\u00b0C, accompanied by swollen lymph glands. This is followed by the development of \u201clarge, firm nodules that are up to 5 cm in diameter in the skin,\u201d a hallmark sign of the disease.<\/p>\n
Prevention remains the most effective defense against LSD. Farmers are strongly encouraged to vaccinate healthy animals to reduce the risk of outbreaks.<\/p>\n
In terms of management, Dr Muzerengi advises supportive treatment, including the use of \u201cPenicillin injections\u201d and vitamins to help manage secondary infections and boost recovery.<\/p>\n
