In severe cases, “abortion may occur,” further compounding losses.

As the disease progresses, the nodules can worsen significantly. Dr Muzerengi notes that these “nodules may become necrotic and ulcerate,” often leading to “secondary infection of skin ulcerations,” which complicates recovery.

The incubation period for Lumpy Skin Disease ranges “between 4 and 14 days post-infection.” During this time, infected animals may not immediately show symptoms, allowing the disease to spread unnoticed within herds.

Once symptoms begin, cattle often experience an initial high fever of up to 41°C, accompanied by swollen lymph glands. This is followed by the development of “large, firm nodules that are up to 5 cm in diameter in the skin,” a hallmark sign of the disease.

Prevention remains the most effective defense against LSD. Farmers are strongly encouraged to vaccinate healthy animals to reduce the risk of outbreaks.

In terms of management, Dr Muzerengi advises supportive treatment, including the use of “Penicillin injections” and vitamins to help manage secondary infections and boost recovery.

With the potential to cause significant economic losses, experts stress that early detection, vaccination, and prompt treatment are essential in safeguarding livestock and sustaining farm productivity.

[email protected]

Instagram: lasmuzagro1

Related

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-1669381584671856"
     data-ad-slot="3579572842"
     data-ad-format="auto"
     data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>
#Farmers #Urged #Act #Lumpy #Skin #Disease #Spreads #ZimEye

Deadly Livestock Threat: Farmers Urged to Act as Lumpy Skin Disease Spreads By Dr Trywell Muzerengi…Farmers are being urged to…

[32,11
3506,3241,6694,4527,10234,202,1436,3420,3494
post-54457","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mzansi","category-world","tag-act","tag-disease","tag-eduzim","tag-farmers","tag-lumpy","tag-news","tag-skin","tag-spreads","tag-urged
["GET
