Opposition Movement Calls for Independence Day Boycott Amid Rising Discontent\u2026<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
Tinashe Sambiri\u2013 The Action Democratic Movement (ADM) has urged Zimbabweans to boycott this year\u2019s Independence Day celebrations, citing worsening living conditions and what it describes as a growing national crisis.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the movement questioned the significance of commemorating independence in the face of economic hardship and social decline. <\/p>\n
\u201cOn the 18th of April, we are once again asked to celebrate independence. But as we reflect on our daily realities\u2014rising poverty, struggling hospitals, unemployment, and a future that feels uncertain\u2014we must ask ourselves: what exactly are we celebrating?\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n
ADM said the ideals of independence have not been realised for many citizens. \u201cIndependence was meant to bring dignity, opportunity, and prosperity to every Zimbabwean. Yet today, many of our people are suffering more than ever before. This is not the promise we fought for. This is not the Zimbabwe we deserve,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n
While acknowledging the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle, the movement insisted that honouring that history should include confronting present challenges. \u201cAs ADM, we are not rejecting our history or the sacrifices of our heroes. We honor them. But true honor means standing up when the values they fought for are being undermined,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n
The organisation called for what it described as a peaceful and unified boycott of the April 18 celebrations. \u201cWe therefore call for a peaceful and united boycott of the 18th of April celebrations. This is not an act of disrespect\u2014it is an act of conscience,\u201d ADM said.<\/p>\n
The group also outlined its grievances, stating, \u201cWe say: No to the erosion of our Constitution. No to policies that deepen poverty. No to silence in the face of injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n
It further emphasised its demands for change, adding, \u201cAnd yes\u2014to democracy. Yes\u2014to accountability. Yes\u2014to a Zimbabwe that works for all its people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Framing the boycott as a symbolic protest, ADM said the day should instead reflect the realities faced by citizens. \u201cLet this day be a statement: that the people of Zimbabwe refuse to celebrate symbolism while suffering in reality. Let it be a turning point where our voices grow louder, stronger, and impossible to ignore.\u201d<\/p>\n
The statement concluded with a call for unity and resolve among citizens: \u201cTogether, peacefully and firmly, we say: enough is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
