The organisation says the move appears calculated to intimidate student leaders, particularly as ZINASU has been vocal in opposing the controversial Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill.

The raid comes barely a day after the arrest of former ZINASU president Emmanuel Sitima, who also serves as Youth Convenor of the Defend the Constitution Platform (DCP). Sitima is currently being held at Harare Central Police Station, with reports indicating he is being detained without clearly stated charges—raising concerns among rights groups about due process and the rule of law.

ZICOMO argues that these developments reflect a broader pattern of state intolerance toward dissent, especially from student movements that have historically played a critical role in Zimbabwe’s political discourse. Since independence in 1980, successive governments led by ZANU PF have faced repeated accusations of curtailing civil liberties, including freedom of expression, assembly, and academic freedom.

Student unions such as ZINASU have frequently borne the brunt of this repression. From the 1990s through the 2000s, university campuses became sites of intense political contestation, with student leaders often subjected to arrests, suspensions, and expulsions for mobilising against government policies. Laws such as the now-repealed Public Order and Security Act (POSA), alongside provisions in the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, have historically been used to criminalise protest and silence critics.

Academic freedom has also come under sustained pressure, with lecturers and researchers facing intimidation or dismissal for expressing views deemed critical of the state. Observers note that such actions have contributed to a climate of fear within institutions of higher learning, undermining their role as spaces for open debate and critical inquiry.

ZICOMO maintains that the latest actions against ZINASU signal a continuation of this legacy, warning that the targeting of students undermines democratic participation and constitutional rights. The organisation has called on security forces to uphold the rule of law and respect citizens’ freedoms, including the right to express dissenting views.

The group further questioned the timing of the crackdown, arguing it coincides with growing opposition to the proposed constitutional amendments, which critics say lack broad public support.

Invoking the ideals of the liberation struggle, ZICOMO cited remarks by nationalist leader Edson Zvobgo, who once envisioned an independent Zimbabwe founded on liberty and freedom from fear. The organisation argues that current developments reflect a departure from those founding principles.

“As Zimbabwe marks 46 years of independence, citizens must reflect on whether the promise of freedom is being upheld,” ZICOMO said, urging Zimbabweans to unite in defence of constitutionalism and democratic rights.

Related

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-1669381584671856"
     data-ad-slot="3579572842"
     data-ad-format="auto"
     data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>
#Police #Raid #ZINASU #Offices #Arrest #Student #Leader #ZimEye

Police Raid ZINASU Offices, Arrest Student Leader Harare — The Zimbabwe Constitutional Movement (ZICOMO) has raised alarm over what it…

[32,11
1536,6694,724,202,2341,575,7725,2283,10463
post-56179","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mzansi","category-world","tag-arrest","tag-eduzim","tag-leader","tag-news","tag-offices","tag-police","tag-raid","tag-student","tag-zinasu
["GET
