Democratic Movement (ADM) has issued a strongly worded statement on Saturday, casting doubt on Zimbabwe’s independence narrative as the country marked 46 years since liberation.

In its statement, the opposition group said the celebrations should be met with reflection rather than celebration, arguing that the country has failed to achieve the true meaning of freedom for its citizens.

“As Zimbabwe marks its 46th independence, let’s remain resolute and steadfast towards the cause of our struggle,” said ADM. “Zimbabwe is not truly independent, and the sacrifices of those who died fighting for the liberation of Zimbabwe should not go in vain.”

The party’s remarks come amid continued economic challenges, rising poverty levels, and growing public frustration over governance and service delivery issues.

ADM said the legacy of the liberation struggle risks being undermined if the promises made during the fight for independence are not fulfilled in the lived reality of ordinary Zimbabweans.

The statement adds to a growing chorus of political voices who argue that independence has not translated into meaningful economic freedom or improved living standards for many citizens.

While government officials continue to emphasise national sovereignty and progress since 1980, opposition groups like ADM maintain that the country remains far from the ideals envisioned at independence.

<h3
