Zimbabweans With Economic Growth Claims on Independence Day

By A Correspondent – At the 2026 Independence Day celebrations held at Maphisa Stadium in Maphisa, President Emmerson Mnangagwa presented an optimistic account of the country’s economy, even as many citizens continue to face rising hardship and deepening economic pressure.

Addressing the nation on Saturday, Mnangagwa insisted that Zimbabwe is on a path of recovery, highlighting what he described as improvements in key economic indicators.

“The economy is expanding, and our foreign currency reserves are steadily increasing,” Mnangagwa said.

However, his remarks have been met with criticism from sections of the public who argue that the reality on the ground is far different, with many households still struggling with high prices and limited income opportunities.

He further stated that “following a series of reforms, inflation has been brought under control, helping to stabilize the ZiG currency.” Despite this, concerns persist about currency stability and the cost of living.

The President also pointed to major sectors driving the economy, saying “gold, tobacco, and platinum, along with diaspora remittances, are driving national growth and improving the ease of doing business.”

Mnangagwa added that “ongoing reviews of taxes and levies are further enhancing the business environment,” while also noting that this year’s Independence celebrations were held “against the backdrop of a successful agricultural season.”

Despite these assurances, critics argue that such statements appear disconnected from the daily struggles of ordinary Zimbabweans, who continue to face economic pressure and uncertainty.

<h3
