Sengezo Tshabangu ahead of the introduction of Constitutional Amendment Bill 3 (CAB 3), with critics accusing him of framing dissenting voices as enemies of the state.

On Wednesday, Tshabangu speaking ahead of the Bill’s first reading in Parliament, called for calm and unity among Zimbabweans, saying: “As we prepare for the introduction of CAB 3 for its 1st reading in Parly, I urge all peace-loving, patriotic and development minded Zimbabweans to uphold the prevailing peace in our God given nation.”

He further stated: “This is a time when we all need unity against enemies of our beloved Zimbabwe.”

However, the use of the term “enemies” has triggered a strong backlash from political observers and opposition supporters, who argue that such language risks delegitimising constitutional debate and branding critics of the amendment process as anti-national.

Critics say the remarks are particularly sensitive given ongoing concerns surrounding CAB 3, which has already generated heated public discussion over its potential implications for governance, accountability, and democratic reforms.

Some political commentators have accused Tshabangu of attempting to reframe opposition to the Bill as hostility toward the nation itself, a move they warn could deepen political polarisation at a time when consensus is needed on constitutional matters.

As Parliament prepares to debate CAB 3, tensions continue to mount, with stakeholders divided over whether the process will strengthen national institutions or intensify existing political fault lines.

<h3
