Celebrates Mswati’s Long Rule Amid Growing Tension Over Own Term Extension At Home

Tinashe Sambiri– President Emmerson Mnangagwa has travelled to Eswatini to attend celebrations marking the long reign of King Mswati III, at a time when political debate is intensifying back home over constitutional amendments and speculation around leadership tenure.

Mnangagwa arrived in Eswatini on Thursday to join regional leaders in commemorations of King Mswati III’s 40 years on the throne and his 58th birthday, an event being framed as both a cultural milestone and a regional diplomatic gathering.

The visit has, however, stirred political chatter in Zimbabwe, with critics drawing comparisons between the monarch’s decades-long rule and ongoing domestic tensions surrounding constitutional reform discussions.

ZANU PF confirmed the visit in a brief statement, saying: “President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Eswatini to attend celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the reign of King Mswati III, which coincide with the monarch’s 58th birthday.”

While the ruling party has presented the trip as part of routine regional diplomacy, opposition voices and commentators argue that the timing of such high-profile international engagements is politically sensitive, given ongoing debates around governance and succession frameworks at home.

Some analysts say the optics of celebrating a long-serving monarch abroad inevitably invite comparisons and speculation, even if no official link exists between the visit and domestic constitutional matters.

Supporters of the trip, however, maintain that Mnangagwa’s attendance underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to regional solidarity and continued engagement within Southern Africa’s diplomatic and cultural networks.

The Eswatini celebrations brought together several Heads of State and Government, but back in Zimbabwe, discussions around constitutional amendments and leadership tenure continue to dominate political discourse.

 <span id="wordads-inline-marker"
