Tinashe Sambiri\u2013 Former police officer turned politician Togara Fambi has sharply criticised President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s 2030 agenda, alleging that state institutions are being used to suppress dissenting voices following his recent arrest.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued over the weekend, Fambi expressed gratitude for the public support he received, while condemning his detention by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.<\/p>\n
\u201cGood afternoon, Zimbabwe. I am so humbled by your love,\u201d he said.
Fambi described his arrest as unjustified, adding: \u201cMy arrest by the Zimbabwe Republic Police on Sunday was irrelevant, unnecessary, uncalled for and unlawful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the ordeal, he said he was moved by the solidarity shown by supporters. \u201cToday I shed tears, not because of the pain that I endured but I am shocked by the way you stood with me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The former Assistant Inspector, who now leads the National Progressive Democrats (NPD), used the opportunity to call out the ruling ZANU PF, urging it to rely on political ideas rather than force.<\/p>\n
\u201cI call upon ZANU PF Party to use political ideology, not to use state apparatus to silence dissenting voices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Fambi also took a firm stance against proposed constitutional changes, declaring: \u201cWe will die resisting CAB3. No to 2030.\u201d<\/p>\n
His remarks come after his recent arrest and detention, which he maintains were politically motivated. <\/p>\n
Authorities accuse him of violating the Police Act through social media posts made while he was still serving, as well as cyberbullying following his release.
Fambi spent two nights in custody at Masvingo Central Police Station after being picked up at a roadblock near Gwanda. His arrest followed a warrant issued over his failure to attend a police disciplinary hearing.<\/p>\n
He has consistently denied wrongdoing, insisting the charges are meant to punish him for speaking out.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am being persecuted for criticising the Government,\u201d Fambi said earlier.
The case has sparked wider debate around political freedoms, the role of security institutions, and the limits of expression for former members of the disciplined forces in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n
