{"id":57775,"date":"2026-05-01T07:39:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T07:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eduzim.co.zw\/news\/?p=57775"},"modified":"2026-05-01T07:39:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T07:39:09","slug":"workers-heartbeat-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eduzim.co.zw\/news\/2026\/05\/01\/workers-heartbeat-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Workers the \u201cheartbeat of the economy\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-1669381584671856\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Africa tv video display -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1669381584671856\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3579572842\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\">\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has outlined government\u2019s plans to expand economic opportunities, particularly for young people, as South Africa marks International Workers\u2019 Day.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Friday, the Minister paid tribute to workers across sectors, describing them as the \u201cheartbeat of the economy\u201d and central to the country\u2019s democratic foundation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She said Workers\u2019 Day serves not only as a celebration of past struggles, but as a commitment to ensuring that decent work becomes a reality for all South Africans.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister announced that 2026 has been declared the \u201cYear of Putting Young South Africans to Work\u201d, in honour of the 1976 youth and the upcoming golden jubilee of the uprising.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She said government interventions, including Labour Activation Programmes (LAP), are being used to tackle unemployment nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>According to Meth, nearly R3.4 billion in contracts has already been allocated to implementing partners across six provinces, benefiting more than 118 000 people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These efforts are aimed at expanding access to jobs and skills development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are ensuring that the dignity of work is accessible to more South Africans than ever before,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Meth highlighted the ongoing enforcement of the National Minimum Wage and occupational health and safety standards, stressing that fair pay and safe working conditions are essential for productivity and economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>On the legislative front, the Minister pointed to several reforms currently before Parliament.
