Reasons for the abolition of slave trade

Reasons for the abolition of Atlantic slave trade

  1. Slave rebellions
  • Slave trade was banned due to slaves rebellions in the farms and plantations
  • Some slaves began to kill their masters
  • Some boiled seeds so that they would not germinate.
  • Some slaves ran away and established maroon societies and lived there.
  • Some engaged in breaking the machines and as a result slavery was no longer profitable.

2. Economic reasons

  • An influential economist, Adam Smith created a theory stating that slave labour is the most inefficient way of working as workers will be more productive if they are being paid to work.
  • The British also saw that it was better to set free all slaves so that they would go back to their mother countries and be consumers of British goods.
  • Transportation of slaves from Africa was also increasingly becoming expensive so the British realized that it was better to quit the whole process.
  • Economic arguments claimed that new industries had emerged in Britain which meant that British cities no longer relied on the slave trade and could make money elsewhere due to the Industrial Revolution
