According to a 2017 report by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), more than 50% of the people in the world had never made or received a call in 2016. This means that over 3.5 billion people did not have access to a landline or mobile phone.
The report also found that the vast majority of people who had never made or received a call lived in developing countries. In sub-Saharan Africa, for example, only 15% of people had access to a landline or mobile phone in 2016.
There are a number of reasons why so many people in the world do not have access to a landline or mobile phone. One reason is poverty. In many developing countries, people simply cannot afford to pay for a phone or the monthly subscription fees. Another reason is lack of infrastructure. In some rural areas, there is no cell phone coverage or landlines are not available.
The lack of access to phones can have a significant impact on people’s lives. For example, people who do not have a phone may have difficulty finding work or accessing essential services. They may also be more isolated from their friends and family.
The good news is that the number of people who have access to phones is increasing. In 2000, only 17% of the world’s population had access to a landline or mobile phone. By 2016, that number had increased to 63%.
As the world’s economy continues to grow and technology continues to improve, we can expect to see even more people getting access to phones in the future. This will help to bridge the digital divide and improve the lives of millions of people around the world.
