City of Harare mayor Jacob Mafume has set August this year as the target for the completion of bucket seat installation at Rufaro Stadium.
The stadium currently has bucket seats installed only in the VIP and VVIP sections. The plans will see the seating upgrade extended across the rest of the facility, bringing it in line with modern standards.
“We want to say by August we would have installed all the bucket seats at Rufaro Stadium,” the mayor said.
Mafume also addressed concerns from the public regarding increased match entrance fees, saying:
“Matchday funds don’t come to the council directly. What we do is we surrender the stadium to the home team, who take all the gate takings.
“They simply hire the venue from the city council and probably pay about $1,000 or give 4% of their gate takings to council.”
His remarks come amid growing scrutiny from football supporters, many of whom have questioned the justification for rising costs at local matches.
