Thousands Stranded at Beitbridge Border Post

By Business Reporter-Thousands of travellers have been left stranded at the busy Beitbridge Border Post after authorities intensified a crackdown on smuggled and undeclared goods, resulting in the impounding of several buses.

Scores of buses were still held up yesterday as officials from the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) carried out extensive inspections, significantly disrupting cross-border travel and business operations.

Authorities are conducting thorough searches to ensure that goods suspected to be commercial cargo—such as furniture items including chairs and desks—are properly declared and transported through appropriate channels.

“These chairs and tables belong to one person. They are commercial goods and should be transported by trucks, not buses. They were not declared,” a ZIMRA officer told New Ziana.

Bus operators say the practice of transporting goods via passenger buses has become widespread, particularly among traders based in South Africa who send merchandise to Zimbabwe.

“These chairs are destined for Harare, but the owner is in Pretoria. This operation is slowing down our business,” said one driver.

However, the crackdown has been welcomed by some in the trucking sector, who view it as a long-overdue intervention.

“A bus is faster and does not require import permits or licences, as is the case with trucks transporting commercial consignments. Because of these advantages, clients have increasingly preferred buses,” said one transporter.

“Lately, most of our clients have abandoned us for buses, and business has been low. This operation may help restore balance.”

The intensified inspections have also affected ordinary travellers, with many reporting prolonged delays at the border.

“We arrived on Saturday evening, and our bus only reached the inspection bay today. I am exhausted,” said one frustrated passenger.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions between informal cross-border trading practices and formal customs regulations, as authorities attempt to tighten compliance and curb revenue losses.
