Zimbabwe national team head coach Marian Marinica has outlined his approach to squad selection ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup in London, UK.
The Warriors are set to take part in the invitational four-nations tournament to be played at the Valley Stadium.
The national team will face Nigeria in the semi-final, while the other two teams – India and Jamaica – will meet in the other semifinal encounter.
Speaking to The Herald, Marinica stressed the need for continuity while gradually integrating new talent into the Warriors setup.
“I think it’s not all about having sort of trials every international break,” the coach said.
“We don’t have much time to train together and we can only have a few new players at a time.
“But I should say I was really impressed by the youngsters who we called for the first time last month.
“They gave a good account of themselves and they gave us some reason to believe we need to also look into more new players so that we can give them a chance as well.
“But we will always have to balance giving them a run and shaping up our style and, also winning games.”
Marinica also expressed optimism that he will have a full squad to choose from, with several players who previously withdrew expected to return to fitness in time for the tournament.
“I would like an ideal situation where all the players are available for selection,” added Marinica.
“I think all of those who withdrew will now be fit. We are working on having a structure as a team and that works well when everyone is available.”
